What is Psychotherapy?
It's National Psychotherapy Day! What is psychotherapy?
People often get all of the different terms and variant fields confused, but basically, psychotherapy is what has been known as talk therapy. That means that if you've talked with a therapist about your life, you've been to psychotherapy. This is the field where trained therapists help people understand their thoughts, feelings, relationships- basically, we hone in on what is happening at a brain and soul level. I'm happy to celebrate #nationalpsychotherapyday, because of it's incredible value and importance in our culture. Our inner life affects every area of our functioning. How you feel about yourself, will in turn, have an impact on all of your relationships. Psychotherapists connect a person's history with their present experience. I literally can't imagine living without ever surveying the entire scope of my life. Psychotherapy, I believe, can be the catalyst for cultivating life, and make life more abundant. So, why, if this is the trajectory of therapy, is there such a stigma still about going to therapy? I think it's lessening, but seriously, who doesn't need help along the way? My goodness, I want to surround myself with people who are honest about their weakness, their brokenness, their limits. People who can admit their needs, and walk in vulnerability, are by far, the safest people to be connected to. if we are sick, we go to a doctor, if our body needs adjustment, without hesitation, we seek physical therapy or chiropractic help. Listen, if your heart is hurting beyond what is manageable, consider seeking out a therapist. Choose freedom, life, and peace. Today, let's normalize therapy. I've been and go, and I am forever thankful to have a safe place to unpack all of me.
